The European Commission set up and on 18th December 2009 adopted a report about "Equality between men and women". This exhaustive report suggests that gender equality can bring a significant contribution to sustainable development, employment, competition and social cohesion.
In consequence, the Commission is proposing that the European Council requests the member States to take action without delay about certain problems mentioned in the report, notably those concerning :
Wide wage differentials between women and men,
The necessity of ensuring gender diversity on boards of directors and in public companies quoted on the stock exchange,
Improved action to reconcile professional and private life (granting leave for family reasons, flexible hours …).
There are other proposals and one of the most important is to improve efforts to prevent sexist violence and struggle against it.
It is important to read this significant report which is provided as an annexe.
