THE RIGHTS OF HANDICAPPED PEOPLE AND THE RATIFICATION OF THE CONVENTION

The United Nations have established a Convention for the Rights of handicapped people. It came into force on 3rd May 2008 in all the countries which have ratified it. It promotes the rights and liberties of handicapped people as well as respect for their dignity.

It falls within the framework of respect for Human Rights.

It reaffirms that any person who suffers from any kind of disability should benefit from every fundamental right and liberty.

Nevertheless, certain countries have not yet ratified the Convention or its protocol. Certain countries have signed and ratified it while others have signed but not yet ratified (Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Malta, Poland, Holland, Rumania, Slovakia…). Obviously the European Bars Federation intends to support the implementation of the Convention.

The bars should commit themselves to this fine and just cause. If you are from a State which has not ratified the Convention or its protocol, I invite you to appeal to your Ministry of Justice so that it will be implemented as soon as possible, and inform the press and public opinion about it.

The European bars should commit themselves to the ratification of the Convention.

Michel BENICHOU, President of the European Bars Federation.
