Privacy Statement of The Federation of European Bars (hereafter: the FBE)

The FBE is a non-profit organization under French (Alsacian local) Law. Its members are the national, the regional or local Bars in the member States of the Council of Europe, or Bars in a country which is not a member of the Council of Europe admitted as an observer if it declares that it acknowledges and will observe the principles set out in the statutes of the FBE. The FBE has a participatory status with the Council of Europe.

Its purpose is to foster permanent links between the Bars established in member states of the Council of Europe, through its members, representing more than 1 million European lawyers.

In line with its objectives and core values, the FBE fully commits to respecting the privacy of citizens and to uphold their right to protection of their privacy.

The lawful and correct treatment of personal information is very important to us for maintaining the confidence of those with whom we deal.

What personal data do we process?

It is not necessary to provide us with any of your personal information. You can visit our site, find out about our activities and positions, learn about our latest news. All without registering your personal data.

If you choose to provide us with your personal information, we will treat your data confidentially, in accordance with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

The personal data that we process may include the following:

  • contact details and other data, including your name, address, telephone number, email address, name of your local bar and name of your lawfirm;
  • username and password (for accessing our website);
  • other data provided by you via our website by filling out the contact form;
  • contact data you have provided to us in any other way.

Purpose of use

Your contact details are kept up to date in our administration, and can, for instance, be used for sending invoices, newsletters, updates, announcements or invitations for our events, to share our views with you, positions and press releases and – occasionally – have your views through a survey. Your data will only be used to inform you about our activities through our Newsletter and you may state at any time that you no longer wish to receive it.

Legal basis of processing

We process your personal data only when this is permitted on grounds of one of the legal bases cited in the GDPR.

We process your personal information because it is necessary for the performance of a contract, such as administering the membership of the FBE.

We may also process personal data if we have a legitimate interest and this does not breach your privacy disproportionately. We use your contact details to invite you to seminars and events, for instance.

We also have a legitimate interest if we use your personal data to contact you after you have approached us yourself.

If  the data processing is based solely on your consent, you may withdraw your consent at any time by unsubscribing from our communications or by sending a written request to the FBE, without prejudice to the lawfulness of the processing undertaken prior to the withdrawal of your consent.

Third Parties

The FBE will never sell or rent personal data to third parties.

Your data will only be shared with subcontractors responsible for our IT infrastructure, the development and maintenance of our website and extranet, to the extent necessary for the execution of their respective tasks. We will of course make sure that these subcontractors guarantee the security and confidentiality of your data.

Your rights

You are in control of your data. Your data is stored and processed until you ask us not to do so anymore. You can ask to be informed which type of processing is being undertaken, you have the right to access your personal information, the right to prevent processing in certain circumstances and the right to correct, rectify, block or erase information which is regarded as wrong information, and of course, you have the right to be forgotten.

How do we secure your personal data?

Personal data will be stored securely and will only be accessible to authorised staff and, exceptionally, subcontractors. Information will be stored for only as long as you wish and will be disposed of appropriately when it can no longer be used.

Your personal data is not transferred to countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA)

When your personal data are processed, your personal data may be shared with third parties. These parties may be located outside the EEA. When applicable, we have taken appropriate security measures for sharing the personal data.
