
Immediately after the FBE conference in Valencia, the Annual Conference of the International Bar Asociation will be held in Madrid. The "Bar Issues Commission" of the IBA will devote the whole day of 5 October 2009 to the subject : "Independence Day" - how do bar associations and lawyers uphold their own independence and that of the justice system ?
There will be round table discussion with the following topics :
1) Why independent attorneys – costs and benefits ?
The session will explore the system and cost of regulation and/or self governance and self policing ; what are the benefits for the public ? What are the benefits for the small and large practitioner ?
The FBE will be represented in this round table by the General Secretary of the FBE : Javier Diago Elorduy
2) Independence of the judiciary
What are the safeguards, the systems of appointments, remuneration, promotion and removal ?
The FBE will be represented in this round table by Eugenio Gay Montalvo, judge at the Spanish Constitutional Court in Madrid and past president of the FBE
3) Alternative business structures
Are non-lawyers, as stakeholders in law firms, a threat to the latter’s independence ?
The first vice president of the FBE, Mirko Ros will take part in this disscusion.
4) Corporate counsel – the fearless advocate ?
