The Conseil National des Barreaux is the French organisation that represents all lawyers ; meanwhile each lawyer is individually called to one of the 181 local bars.
In addition to its function of representing the profession, the Conseil National des Barreaux has specific legal responsibilities.
The Conseil National des Barreaux represents the profession at an international and national level. It has a privileged relationship with the authorities ; it contributes to consultations of interest to the profession and the conditions of its practice. It also plays a part in representing the profession in all the questions relative to texts about the juridical field and judicial institutions.
Furthermore, it is in charge of unifying the rules and practices of the profession ; it has prerogatives as far as lawyers’ vocational training and the organisation of permission for foreign lawyers to have access to the French bar.
Following the recent elections, Thierry Wickers, former President of the Conférence des Bâtonniers, has been elected President of the Conseil National des Barreaux for the year 2009.
