The FBE condemns in the strongest terms, the arrest and detention of Turkish lawyers Gulhan Kaya and Mustafa Taylan Savra on 10 June, 2023. We are gravely concerned that Gulhan Kaya, whose statement was taken at the prosecutor’s office after a two-day detention period, was referred to the Istanbul Court on charges of “being a member of a terrorist organization”. 

The FBE upholds that principle of independence of lawyers, and calls for an end to the criminalisation of lawyers who are undertaking their professional work. The FBE calls for her release from this process and an end to the persecution of lawyers.
